The Pontiac Cars of 21st Century

Does anyone remember the Pontiac Aztek? That was one car which took a lot of criticism due to its odd styling. As a matter of fact, the Pontiac Aztek was called one of the worst cars of all times by the Time magazine. However, it was never too bad as far as performance is concerned. It was an SUV crossover with features like 3.4 liter V6 engine, tilt steering wheel, four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, locks and mirrors. In other words it had some good features and promised customer satisfaction, but its exterior though unique was a put off for most customers. The manufacture of the model was eventually discontinued after 2005.

Walk a couple of years down the lane and you have the Pontiac G5. The coupé model of this car is available in the U.S. In Canada and Mexico, it is also available as a sedan. This 21st century model went on to become one of Pontiac’s best selling models in Canada. That should say something about its performance and styling.

The car is styled along the lines of the Chevrolet Cobalt. One look at the car and you will see that barring a few minor changes, it is almost identical to the Cobalt. It looks quite stylish with its smooth curves and streamlined design.

When it comes to the inside, the car is simple. This is an economy car and the interiors confirm the fact that it is meant to be practical and certainly not fantastic. The metallic touches on the gear shifter, doors and steering add a touch of brightness and style to the otherwise stark cabin.  A great feature on board is the trip computer which keeps you updated about the outside temperature, coolant temperature etc.

The Pontiac G5 coupe is available in two trims the base and the GT. Standard features on board included 5-speed manual transmission, 15inch steel wheels, XM satellite radio, power windows and locks, keyless entry, air conditioning and audio jack for external devices. The GT, being the more upscale version had features like 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth and cruise control. You could also choose to add features like side impact airbags and sunroofs for an extra cost. The GT trim certainly had the upper hand as far as features were concerned. With its better equipment, better suspension and four wheel disc brakes, the GT is one model which is sure to rule the roads.

Next, let us discuss the power house of the car-its engine. Both the base trim and the GT series are powered by a 2.2L inline-four engine that delivers power of 155 hp. This engine has been designed to offer you impressive fuel economy. When it comes to transmission, you can choose between the standard five speed manual transmission or the optional four speed automatic transmission. Either way you are sure to get enough mileage.

The Pontiac brand was pulled off the market after the model year 2010. Pontiac cars are not yet out of the market; you can buy a used G5 and it will surely win a few admiring glances.
